Vanderhoof Community Clean Up: First Green Event and AGM

On Saturday, April 16th beginning at 10 AM in Riverside Park, residents of Vanderhoof will be gathering to participate in the annual community clean-up. Nechako Waste Reduction initiative has organized this event for the past two years. This year, under the umbrella of the Nechako Healthy Community Alliance, the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative will join forces with the Nechako Valley Food Network to create a 'Green Event.'

Highlights of BC Food Systems Network Conference

Thanks to generous funding from BC Healthy Living Alliance, I was able to travel to Chehalis at the end of September to participate in the tenth annual conference of the BC Food Systems Network whose theme this year was Bioregionalism: Healthy Associations between People, Plants, Animals and Nature. For anyone who may not be familiar with this organization, I highly recommend a walk through their website www.fooddemocracy.org if you haven’t already accessed it for good information and resources on food policy, security and agricultural resources.

October 2009 update

As fall is descending upon us, we reflect back on our first season of the farmer’s market and are truly grateful for the support of the community in supporting the farmers and vendors in their endeavours. Buying locally is a powerful way to support local economies, reduce our carbon imprint on our environment and promote one’s own health. With a successful season under our belt, we expect to have even more bountiful produce and other goods to choose from next farmer’s market.

September update on healthy initiatives in Vanderhoof

The Nechako Valley Food Network sponsored two greenhouse tours in August, which were each well attended. Stay tuned for more social, local agricultural events. Fruit from a grower in Keremeos will be available for sale in the Co-op parking lot September 7th & 21st evenings only. Apples, tomatoes, pears, plums and peaches will be available.

Nechako Healthy Community Alliance Update July 2009

A newly formed nonprofit society, the Nechako Healthy Community Alliance is the administrative body
for its two member groups: The Nechako Valley Food Network and Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative.
Both groups are focused on improving the quality of life in the Nechako Valley.

Vanderhoof acknowledged World Environment Day on June 5th by participating in the first annual Clean
Air Challenge that was organized by Nechako Healthy Community Alliance. Residents were encouraged to
reduce our imprint on the environment that day by not using our vehicles to get to work, school etc.
